Anonymous Veteran Donates Purple Heart to Young Stabbing Victim

This past May, a young Wisconsin girl made national news when she became the victim of a brutal attack. Stabbed 19 times by two of her classmates, the 12-year-old girl miraculously survived the attempted murder and spent 6 days recovering in the hospital.

Naturally, the heartbreaking story attracted media attention nationwide; many well-wishers reached out to the victim's family inquiring as to whether they could assist in the young girl's rehabilitation. When the family publicly indicated that the young girl loved hearts, as well as the color purple, the victim understandably received an onslaught of envelopes and packages containing homemade purple paper cutout hearts, as well as purple heart-shaped 'Get Well Soon' cards. What she was not expecting to receive was an actual Purple Heart.

It is unknown whether the Heart's anonymous sender is a soldier, Marine, Airman or Sailor. Nevertheless, the mystery veteran donated his or her Purple Heart – the famously prestigious honor bestowed upon U.S. military service members who are severely wounded or killed in battle – to the young girl along with a note that read: "The only heart I could find! Be strong!"

Stunned and humbled by the gift, the family released the following statement:

"[We are] so touched and moved by this act of kindness [and] would like to personally thank the individual, publicly or privately, for the gift and for their sacrifice for our country."

Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary John Scocos also released a statement:

"It does not surprise me that a decorated veteran unselfishly gave this amazingly brave and courageous little girl something from his or her heart."
