Court Martial Begins for One of Thirty-Two Lackland Air Force Basic Training Officers Accused of Sexual Misconduct

When American airmen and women go through basic military training (BMT) they go to the 331st Training Squadron at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Lackland has routinely been recognized as one of the busiest military training centers in the United States. As such, close to 35,000 new recruits go through BMT at Lackland each and every year. Unfortunately, Lackland has recently found itself at the center of a congressional hearing, and at least 32 of its basic training instructors are currently under investigation for charges of sexual misconduct. So far, 59 alleged victims have come forth and been identified.

As of Monday, February 11th, 2013, court martial proceedings have now begun for one of the accused basic training instructors, Staff Sergeant Craig Leblanc. According to reports, Staff Sgt. Leblanc allegedly used his position as a basic training officer to commit numerous instances of sexual misconduct, as well as sexual assault on a female trainee. He is also accused of making a false statement and obstruction of justice. Although the investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct by other basic training officers is ongoing, drill sergeants and training instructors alike are being disciplined on charges ranging from having an unprofessional relationship to rape.
